Dear friends of Splash:

It’s back-to-school season! At Splash, it's one of our favorite times of the year.

Most of us are familiar with the typical back-to-school necessities: notebooks, uniforms, backpacks, and more. On top of acquiring classroom supplies, parents and guardians at Project WISE schools in Addis Ababa encounter something extra: soap and pad drives.

For schools with limited resources, we train staff and Hygiene Club members to host soap and pad drives during student registration. Availability of soap at handwashing stations is critical to ensuring that kids are practicing healthy habits to avoid diseases. The availability of pads for menstruating students is crucial in reducing barriers to education.

Before the school hosts their first drive, Splash trains school management and teachers on hosting drives and creating a community that values healthy WASH practices. During the soap and pad drives, the schools then educate guardians about the importance of sanitation and handwashing. Guardians are encouraged to contribute any extra soaps or pads to ensure students have the materials they need to be happy and healthy throughout the school year.

These training sessions enable schools and students to take hygiene into their own hands. By supporting this project, you are adding impact to your back-to-school list and we couldn't be more grateful!

A 2021 Review

To our friends and supporters:

While we are excited of all the opportunities and impact that 2022 will bring, we, as an organization, believe that it's important to take time to reflect before charging forward.

Similar to many out there, 2021 continued to be a year of challenges for us. In Addis Ababa, our staff had to juggle their work with constantly evolving school shifts and schedules. Transportation, importation, and the general cost of all goods have gone up exponentially. Despite that all, we reached our anticipated targets for the year while also making great strides forward across multiple areas.

We advanced the technology that helps to run our organization and make critical decisions about our impact. We saw quantum leaps forward in our menstrual health and behavior change programs. Our teams on the ground doing the hard work of major projects are now capable of doing five times more in 2021 than they were even two or three years ago. We've been able to routinize extensive infrastructure work in a way that previously we could only dream of. The schools continue to increase their populations at a staggering rate, and we continue to keep pace.

While 2021 has been one of our hardest years since starting this organization, it has also been one of our strongest. This, of course, can only take place as we continue to receive support from our incredible community who believe in the same thing we do: all kids deserve the opportunity to thrive.

As nothing speaks quite as strongly as numbers, we are happy to report that in the last quarter of 2021, our Addis team installed:

320 drinking stations
328 handwashing stations
98 water storage tanks, increasing water storage by 606,000 litres

We have even greater hopes and plans for 2022, and we look forward to keeping you up to date along the way.
