Urgently help Ateliere Fara Frontiere (Workshops without Borders) recondition and deliver 300 computers to children who have no access to education after schools in Romania closed because of the pandemic. When the health crisis will be over, the computers will be moved to local schools, so even more children can use them in class. The computers are collected as WEEE, tested, cleaned, repaired and prepared for reuse by a team of vulnerable, excluded and marginalized people.
The number of cases of COVID-19 is rapidly growing from one day to another and all Romanian schools have been closed. The Government encouraged school children and teachers to meet online to continue their lessons, but 49% of homes don't own a computer, and in rural areas, 33% of homes have no internet access. With the closing of the schools, children in poor families and disadvantaged communities lost access to education. This is another way in which they're marginalized and left behind.
300 children will be able to take part in online classes and access the digital resources prepared by NGOs and other institutions and continue their education. At least 20 schools will receive the donated computers when the crisis will end, allowing their students to improve their digital skills. At least 7 of the workers in our organization's work integration program will keep their jobs, thus supporting and continuing their journey to escape extreme poverty and exclusion.
Allowing children to continue their education will help them escape social exclusion and thus having better prospects in life. The reconditioned computers will also help them access information on how to obtain the help and resources their families might need in a time of crisis. In the long term, this project also helps our organization continue its mission and support the most vulnerable and also encourage private companies to invest in expanding the project and help us donate more computers.
