The Nepal Mary Child Help Center (NMCHC) has been providing a nurturing home environment to orphaned children since 2007. This project empowers children in Kathmandu to move beyond poverty. Caring for them includes funding their tuition, food, clothing, housing, and enrichment activities. The primary intent is to support these children in reaching their potential to be responsible, self-sufficient and independent adults. Leaders seek to help each child envision a future and a way to reach it.
The problem is that there are many children living at severe risk in the streets of Kathmandu and beyond, whose parents are dead or are not able to care for them. Poverty is a pervasive challenge for communities in Nepal, which is one of the poorest countries in the world. Its government and citizens do not have programs or capacity to care for orphaned and impoverished children.
This project helps address the problem of poor, impoverished, homeless children by directly caring for more children who otherwise would be living on the streets. It also serves as a model for other groups of caring for orphans in a non-institutional household.
The long term impact will be that these orphaned children at Nepal Mary Help Center will have a future, thanks to living in a family setting, eating nourishing food, receiving education and emotional support in recovering from the trauma of life alone on the streets or the threat of being trafficked. They will be able to get jobs and live a meaningful life. While this project is currently working with children, a long term goal is to increase MHCHC's capacity to serve more children.
