Summary

On 9/8/2023, a massive earthquake struck Marrakech & the High Atlas with deadly force. We are committed to providing immediate & long-term support to alleviate immense suffering & restore resilience of rural communities where we have worked for 10+ years, including at Dar Taliba. Our hearts ache for our team & communities who have lost family & seen their homes reduced to rubble. These villages are among the most marginalised & remote in Morocco. Please help us to provide relief & rebuild.

Challenge

The earthquake was the strongest to hit central Morocco in more than a century. We are approaching 3,000 lives lost & countless homes & buildings destroyed. Displaced people in High Atlas communities need urgent assistance including clothing, food, shelter & water. Coupled with the loss of their loved ones & belongings, they now also face challenges in accessing drinking water, food & basic supplies. Over the long term, these communities will need to rebuild their lives & livelihoods.

Solution

Global Diversity Foundation has directly partnered with communities in the High Atlas for a decade. Dar Taliba so far reports little damage at the school, but we are following the situation of students in their communities. Many community members have lost family and their homes. Given our deep ties to the region, we're working on the ground with Moroccan partners to address the most urgent needs- emergency medical services, food, water, shelter & transport-& are committed to long-term recovery.

Long-Term Impact

GDF has supported the resilience of traditional livelihoods in the High Atlas for over a decade. Once the urgent aid work subsides, we will use funds to help families rebuild homes, incorporating earthquake-resistant construction techniques, & re-establish their traditional ways of living & working. Our approach is community-led, and prioritises people's pressing needs over the coming months to ensure that their lives & livelihoods remain resilient & are rehabilitated as soon as possible.
