Houses for 20 families affected by hurricane Earl

By Fundacion Empresarios por Puebla | Haciba Bojalil E.

In August 2016, Hurricane "Earl" hit the far and poor village of Xaltepec, located in the North of Puebla. The hurricane left 13 people dead and hundreds of people were left homeless by the landslide after the storm in Puebla. At the beginning, the community was helped by many organizations, however, few months later, they were forgotten. The objective is to finish the construction of 20 houses for families affected by the hurricane and as of today, they are still living exposed.

Challenge

Imagine 20 families who lost their houses during "Earl" hurricane in 2016 and since then, they are living in houses made of carton and metal sheets. After the disaster, we were in the community of Xaltepec, located 2.5 hours away from Puebla. The Foundation bought the land where the houses will be constructed in a safe place. Now, we need your help to finish the construction of 20 houses and benefit more than 100 people and protect them for the rains and weather.

Solution

The affected people can not build their houses on the same land where the landslides destroyed them. It was necessary a near, new and safe location providing them with a modern house, since the people there is extremely poor and are unable to buy a new land for their homes. The foundation was bought a land started the construction of 20 houses to donate to the affected families. Unfortunately the economic crisis in Mexico affected the local donations and our project is in stand by.

Long-Term Impact

The project will provide a new home to more than 100 people, with these the people will feel safe and unworried when they go out for work, leaving to the grandparent and kids in a safe place. Besides, this allow us to show to the community other construction techniques safer, because these tragedies are a constant in the area. Finally, in the rural areas of Mexico, a house can be the only familiar heritage and go through generation by generation.
