Summary

This project enables 7th and 8th grade girls in Bankondji and a nearby village to develop the ability to understand texts in reading comprehension, math and other subjects, so they can successfully pass the exam needed to enroll in any high school in Cameroon. The 100 girls in the peer-to-peer tutoring projects are very engaged in the program and committed to their personal success. The project also provides scholarships to its graduates, so they can attend day high schools.

Challenge

Many girls in eighth grade living in rural areas cannot perform at grade level and, consequently, cannot pass the exams required to enter high school and continue their education. It takes at least two years of intensive work to bring the girls up to grade-level in reading standards, comprehension, mathematics, and science. The problem is profoundly rooted in the gaps created by the low level of the primary education system. As a result, we bring seventh-grade girls into the tutoring program.

Solution

Aumazo uses collaborative peer-to-peer methods to bring the girls up to grade standards. First of all, we get the girls engaged in taking ownership of their learning rather than rely on understanding by rote. Tutors provide expertise, experience, and encouragement to girls. Tutors support the students in solving problems and obtaining answers through questioning, thus improving their skills and keeping them focused.

Long-Term Impact

The tutoring program increases the pool of eighth-grade graduates for Cameroonian and the Aumazo boarding high school under construction. To date, Aumazo has tutored 81 girls, including 41 who graduated by passing the high school entrance exam (thus, two returning young mothers out of school for four years). Three scholarship beneficiaries graduated and are pursuing higher education. The tutoring program is replicable to neighboring communities. It builds the girls' skills necessary for success
