Summary

This project helps reestablish our core programs to keep girls in school since schools re-opened from COVID-19-closures in 2021 and scale them to neighboring regions in southern Kenya. Specifically, the project will increase Maasai girls' access to education by activating local leadership to support and champion girls' education, enrolling children in primary school and working with schools and communities to add on secondary day schools, providing low-cost secondary education to thousands.

Challenge

In the Loita Hills of Kenya, two barriers often create insurmountable challenges to girls' education. There are only two day secondary schools in the entire 650-square-mile region, and longstanding cultural norms encourage girls to marry early and take up domestic work. School closures necessitated by COVID-19 make girls more vulnerable.

Solution

To address this problem we: 1. enroll children in school, 2. shift attitudes towards formal schooling by sensitizing community leadership to the value of girls' education and 3. open affordable day secondary schools. In response to COVID-19 school closures, we also provide tablets loaded with offline Kenya-specific curriculum to ensure poor rural students may continue to learn.

Long-Term Impact

Educated girls have much brighter futures; their health, income and ability to drive their own lives improves. A ripple continues that breaks the cycle of poverty and helplessness. Keeping girls in school is a leverage point that that empowers girls and impacts generations and entire communities.
