Summary

After 1 full year of being on the ground responding to COVID-19, our team has shifted from only training interns in digital media advocacy to supporting LGBTQIA+ led initiatives. We are proud to advocate for Indigenous, Black, people of the global majority to tell their stories, from a firsthand perspective. We are working with grassroots organizers, Trans and Queer farmers, and creatives to addresses the crises that disproportionately impact Indigenous communities, both rural and urban.

Challenge

In NM there are 21 tribal nations and countless residents who represent a myriad of Indigenous identities. Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, our organization has shifted our programming to include community response and care work since support from the government has been limited and near non-existent, especially for communities hit hardest by the coronavirus. We aim to share supplies and stories from this time while helping to grow the food desperately needed to feed our communities.

Solution

This project aims to address some of what Indigenous peoples and communities of color face as a result of systemic injustice and climate collapse, by holding space for traditional healing and sharing our collective knowledge in a safe environment. Our goal is that each person impacted by the work of our collective will be left with community connections, tools, and supplies to help them continue to survive the impacts of COVID-19 and thrive beyond the sure-to-be-lasting impacts of this virus.

Long-Term Impact

Through the work of our collective, we have already successfully worked in community to provide thousands of care kits to neighbors impacted by COVID-19, in addition to weekly distributions to our unsheltered relatives. Through our farm work, we aim to provide longterm food source solutions for our mutual aid work and through other community partnerships, have dreams of finding permanent housing solutions for our kin. We will also have a myriad of documented stories to share about our survival!
