This project aims to support the nurses and midwives at the Edna Adan University Hospital in Somaliland. Your gift will provide solar lights and phone chargers: invaluable tools that midwives need to save lives including light to see by, power for cell phones to connect with patients and advisors, and the ability to call for help in an emergency.
Somaliland's healthcare system was destroyed by civil war leading to one of the highest Maternal and Infant mortality rates in the world. The Edna Adan Hospital provides quality healthcare, while training a new generation of healthcare professionals, including midwives. Unfortunately, when these midwives go back to their villages to practice, they are often without access to light or power, making their job of helping pregnant women, mothers and children, very challenging.
This project will provide solar powered lights and solar powered phone chargers to midwives so that they can better see their patients in dark huts and at night, access resources like training and advice on their phones, call for help in an emergency, and ultimately, save lives.
This project will provide 200 midwives with solar light and power allowing them to provide better care to pregnant people, new mothers, babies, and their entire community. Often a midwife is the only trained medical provider in her community so her work goes beyond "just" maternal and infant care to increase healthcare access for an entire community.
