Women who have suffered from Perinatal loss experience severe emotional and social trauma. Cases of neglect, abuse, and rejection are common and the situation is worse among those women who have experienced multiple losses. This project will come up with maternal interventions to support 1000 women who have experienced Perinatal loss in Kismayo, Somalia. We will offer counseling, form support groups, health education, and referral services.
According to UNICEF, Somalia has among the world's highest rates of maternal and neonatal mortality. The women have limited access to quality healthcare services, inadequate mental health support, the social stigma surrounding pregnancy loss, and cultural barriers to seeking help. The women are stigmatized both at the community level and health workers have limited skills to handle a perinatal loss. In most cases when a woman loses are child they are treated as an outcast.
JAPDO will train Health workers on basic counseling skills, offer counseling to women at all stages, health education and community awareness, and form support groups. The support groups will provide a platform for these women to share their experiences and support future mothers who experience the same. At the same time, the support group will start an IGA that will improve their financial well-being and ensure sustainability.
The project will offer social and mental support to 1,000 women who have experienced perinatal loss, thus supporting their social, emotional, and mental well-being. The community will be sensitized and healthcare workers trained to minimize discrimination and stigmatization of these women and their families.
