Forty years of war and insecurity, chronic poverty, repeated droughts and the COVID-19 pandemic had already had a devastating impact on the people of Afghanistan. Now, overtwo years on from the Taliban takeover, for many millions of families, the humanitarian emergency shows little sign of abating. We are raising funds to deliver vital emergency relief to families in some of the most remote areas of the country whose lives have been affected by the ongoing crisis.
Economic collapse, brought about by the withdrawal of development assistance and the imposition of financial sanctions following the Taliban takeover has further complicated an extremely challenging operational context. Over the past few years, extreme drought, mounting debt, rising unemployment and this unfolding economic crisis has resulted in acute levels of food insecurity, with 92% of Afghan families currently not eating enough food.
The incredible resilience that communities across Afghanistan have shown over the past few years is now stretched to breaking point. We are continuing to provide food parcels, cash assistance, emergency shelter, hygiene kits including soap and laundry detergent, kitchen kits and items such as solar powered lamps, stoves and gas cylinders to support vulnerable, poverty-stricken families to get back on their feet and prepare for the winter.
