The Alagados favela is a 50,000 inhabitants urban neighborhood in Salvador de Bahia, one of the poorest of Brazil's large cities. It is infested by both human and drug trafficking. And of course the poorest children and teenagers are particularly vulnerable. With our program 'Being a Child in the Alagados', we offer secure and free school support. We serve 90 children between 6 and 15 years old, who receive tutoring, lessons in ecology, and training in care for others, along with 2 meals a day.
Drug trafficking is the main disease of the Alagados favela. The vast majority of the young inhabitants grow up without their father who is often dead or in jail. Since the family income is generally insufficient to cover the basic needs, many suffer from deficiencies in food and receive little medical care. They spend a lot of unsupervised time each day, either in the street, exposed to the dangers of violence, drugs, and trafficking, or else on the internet without supervision.
In this context, 'Ser Crianca em Alagados' is the Joao de Deus Association program that provides access to a human and integral quality education for 90 children (6-15 years old) and their families. It's a free program, offering 2 meals a day, home visits and personalized assistance, priority for the most needy people, tutoring of children in Portuguese and mathematics, human and citizen training (with a new theme every month), sports times, and cultural tours, along with fun leisure activities.
Offer a better future (high-level education, job) for almost 100 children and teenagers, by encouraging these young people to discover and develop their talents, and by creating bridges to quality professional training.
