The Syrian crisis, exacerbated by the recent earthquake, is one of the most complex humanitarian emergency. After 13 years of war, most Syrians need urgent aid, and thousands of children are out of school. COOPI, active in Syria since 2017, launched an Education in Emergency project to strengthen resilience by promoting inclusive, quality education. The project rehabilitates 6 schools in rural Damascus, providing a safe learning environment for 2,400 students, their families, and 120 teachers.
The immediate challenge is to provide a protective, safe and stimulating learning environment for children and teachers affected by the crisis. Given the current state of educational infrastructure and resources, there is an urgent need to rehabilitate damaged schools, supply educational materials and ensure the well-being of students and teachers. Additionally, increasing community awareness and involvement is essential to effectively support these initiatives.
To address these challenges, COOPI is implementing a comprehensive approach focused on rehabilitating educational infrastructure and supporting the educational community. The project includes the following key activities: School Rehabilitation Educational Materials Community Engagement Teacher Training Psychosocial Activities
By improving education infrastructure and resources, more children will attend school regularly, reducing the education gap caused by the crisis. Training and support for teachers will increase their capacity to provide effective education and support to students. Ultimately, this initiative will help rebuild Syria's educational foundation, fostering a generation capable of contributing to the country's recovery and future development.
