Summary

The Widows can project is a project is being implemented in informal settlements of Nairobi Kenya. Namely; Kibera, Dandora, Mathare and muru Kwa njenga. The project builds on the social empowerment processes initiated under that seeks to adopt an integrated approach in the four informal settlement to strengthen simultaneously all the key dimensions of widows' empowerment - social, economic and leadership. Diversify economic opportunities and choices that lead to sustainable increase in HHs.

Challenge

Across a wide range of cultures, widows are subject to harsh patriarchal customary and religious laws and confront all kinds of Problems faced by marginalized widows in Kenyan which are; High levels of unemployment and income insecurity Inadequate access and participation in economic, political and social processes Poor access to credit and other financial institutions Social issues - exploitation, GBV, stigmatization and neglect Lack of respect at the family and community level

Solution

At least 50 poor and marginalized widows in Kenya become members of SHGs supported by project and trained on entrepreneurship and financial literacy by the programme 50 widows will bwe able access micro-financial institution 50 will be trained by the project running small microenterprises and facilited to support small business so that they support their families

Long-Term Impact

Strengthen leadership and negotiating power and agency of women, especially belonging to the marginalized groups: Facilitate consolidation of SHGs into cluster level groups to provide larger social identity and, with time, social acceptance of widows in the new role and space that is gradually redefined by them. SHG leaders (some of whom would graduate as cluster leaders) would have larger arena to practice and experience mobility, decision making, thus giving them opportunities to mobilize
