Hope Trust plan to continue existing counselling offered in Athlone and Galway, Ireland and over zoom, particularly to those who self harm or have suicidal ideation. This project would subsidise 250 more counselling hours and 40 more support group hours, to those who are in need. Men aged 25-44 and women aged 45-64 recorded highest suicide deaths for 2019, plus suicide contributed to the highest number of deaths amongst young men under 25 years. Figures for 2020/21 are only provisional now.
According to a Department of Health survey reported in IrishTimes, December 2022 "One in 10 young adults say they have attempted to take their own life at some point in the past" and "8% of those who know someone who has died by suicide report that the death has had a significant or devastating effect on them that they still feel". These are warning signs for all age groups, but particularly for the 18-24 year age group, that should be taken seriously.
Hope Trust offer low cost, holistic counselling and support in the midlands and west of Ireland where clients can explore issues cognitively, emotionally or spiritually. Our target group are people who may be isolated or disconnected within the community, or feel they are not coping with life issues. The emphasis is on finding hope and purpose in life and in so doing addressing poor mental health. We are now offering counselling online which is more inclusive to outside areas.
Once a person finds purpose for their life and addresses negative thought processes they are better equipped to be productive in their families and communities. Offering a reliable counselling service in a situation where there is limited support provides a community with a resource that offers hope if members of their own families are affected by suicidal thinking. This impacts not only the person being counselled, but their whole family as well. We aim to address isolation.
