U.S. Virgin Islands, June 6, 2019 - During a plenary session on climate resilience at the Clinton Global Initiative on June 4, 2019, former Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton recognized GlobalGiving for its commitment to disaster recovery and preparedness in the Caribbean.
“Many families are still navigating the complex process of recovery. GlobalGiving commits to fund the three long-term recovery groups working here to build long-term resiliency. We could not be happier to announce this commitment!” said Secretary Clinton.
GlobalGiving, which has more than 15 years of experience supporting locally-led disaster recovery, committed a new $250,000 grant to St. Croix Foundation for Community Development in support of long-term recovery groups on St. John, St. Croix, and St. Thomas. These three long-term recovery groups made up of local actors have identified a need for more case managers to fill the gaps in the recovery. They will use the money to fund those positions, as well as shared trainings and systems for case management. The grant is part of the more than $17 million GlobalGiving has raised to support community-led recovery after the 2017 hurricane season in the Caribbean.
Imani Daniel, Executive Director of the St. Thomas Recovery Team, has been at the forefront of the effort to help the most vulnerable people in her community after hurricanes Irma and Maria. “We’re thankful for GlobalGiving’s leadership in supporting local long-term disaster recovery, and we’re grateful for the trust and collaboration we have come to expect from the GlobalGiving team,” said Daniel. “GlobalGiving’s support enables us to say ‘yes, we can help’ to our neighbors who’ve heard ‘no’ far too many times. GlobalGiving’s approach is worth investing in; it should be considered the model for the future of disaster recovery collaboration.”

JetBlue, Cruzan Rum, and 3M are among the companies funding the work in the region.
