In this year’s Queen’s Birthday honours, Eleanor Harrison, CEO of GlobalGiving UK, was awarded an OBE for her services to overseas development. ‘I am absolutely thrilled,’ says Eleanor. ‘I feel I don’t deserve such recognition when there are so many who do so much without their work ever being publically acknowledged. I know this from my own experience.
I am totally dependent on a superb team of paid employees who are supported in their work by over forty volunteers. I would not have received this honour if it were not for their enthusiasm, their passion and their dedication. The award is as much theirs as it is mine - it may sound clichéd, but it is unquestionably true.’
Given the current debate concerning the merits of overseas aid, Eleanor feels it is significant that she has been recognised for the work she does for non-profits around the globe. GlobalGiving UK specialises in helping grassroots organisations not just survive but thrive through online training and mentoring programmes and skilled volunteer programmes.
‘The British public is always most generous and responsive to natural disasters,’ she says, ‘but every country, including the UK, is very dependent on the work done by small groups of people who are doing their very best to improve the lives of those in their local communities. These groups deserve our support and I believe my award, in its way, recognises the value of their work.’
