Nataly the successful entrepreneur!

Thank you for helping us to make such a difference in the lives of the people we serve. The impact that your gift is making to individuals, children, women, families and communities is really powerful. Together we are changing lives.

I want to speak about one of our partners we have been involved with for approximately 10years, Nali Bali. It is a National Non-Government Organization that is funded to roll out a literacy campaigns throughout South Africa and we are one of their partners who operate in Limpopo. We recommended a few mothers from our SHG groups and also a few of our Rovers (18-30yr age group) who were waiting to go to University because they were unable to find placement this year.

Some of our children from the Cubs and Scouts Program also attend these reading clubs to enhance their english language, their mother tongue language and their love for reading. Another synergistic program which meets the needs of the children.

Your support means we are not fixed just to certain projects, when opportunities arise like Nali Bali, we are able to give the participants interview skills, send people off for interviews (taxi fares), and assist with any support they may need throughout the project. Eleven people have been recommended by KTD196 and employed by Nali Bali. This will give them a work history, something for their resume, recommendation letters, and hopefully a career pathway after Nali Bali project funding is completed.

Most of all I love they PAY IT FORWARD FACTOR of the work we do. People like Nataly have very little but they have a heart to make a difference. That is what KTD196 is about for me, having a dream and drawing others along as you fuflill your dream, helping and changing others along the way!

You make this possible. These eleven families have financial relief; the eleven individuals have been given opportunities they would never have had without your support.

My name is Nataly, I am 38 years old. I have a two children, my son is 20yrs old and at University, my daughter is 5yrs old. I live with my mum in Myakayaka a very poor village. We don't have running water, electricity, we have a pit toilet. We survive on my youngest child's Child Support Grant of R500 a month ($27USD). My mother is too young for the pension yet. We some times have piece jobs where we do farming work to earn more money, but that is seasonal and not lasting.

I am involved in Nali Bali on Mondays and Thursdays with reading groups. And then on Tuesdays and Wednesdays I go to SHG groups. Nali Bali is a reading project to help get kids involved in reading and to learn to love reading to help them at school. SHG is for me! To help me. SHG opened the door to Nali Bali, I was recommended through KTD196 to Nali Bali to work with the children, I love it. I participate in both projects because I love it. I love to help people. I love to work and I love to help people. I love helping anybody’s.

SHG, I love it better today because it changed my life in this manner. I didn’t know how to plan my things, I didn’t know how to budget, I didn’t know how to plan, it made a big difference to me and my family, it just opened my mind and it helps me emotionally. I can feel that no no no sometimes people have been through the same problems as me, so I learn the best ways to help myself in situations when I thought there was no answer. So it helps me so much and with the SHG everybody’s starting to run a business and myself, I am selling eggs and yes, I am SUCCEEDING!

I am having a dream now thanks to KTD196. I like to volunteer. I want to help others; I feel so good about my life now.

Impacting Foreign Volunteers such as Elizabeth.

One of the many reasons I love my job is because I get to meet people from all over the world and share the work I do with them, touch them in ways that they are forever changed. I love that aspect, stretching people to not only believe they can be the best version of themselves but also to make a plan to become that version.

On the 10th May 2023 you met Derryck and today you will meet Elizabeth, another Tear Fund Volunteer who was greatly impacted by the work we do and who still stays in touch, on occasion, who has such a big heart (to match her smile) for children. She was infectious. From KTD196, she realised she wanted to teach and went back to London and finished her Post Graduate Degree in Education.

She ran with her opportunities.

I hope you are inspired by her story and the impact KTD196 and our children had on Elizabeth.

From September to December 2017, I had the privilege of volunteering with ‘Keep The Dream 196’ on the ICS program. The program was delivered by Tearfund who partnered with Zoë-Life and together I as well as other volunteers got the chance to volunteer in South Africa for 3 months.

During my time in Limpopo, I volunteered in a team which consisted of 3 UK volunteers and 4 South African volunteers. We still regularly keep in contact and I am thankful for the friendships made in South Africa. I was able to work alongside the staff of KTD196 and I was inspired by the great work they do for children and vulnerable orphans in their community. KTD 196 are a cubs and scouts movement which aims to build young people from the ages of 5 to 26 years to be resilient and respectful.

My role was to lead games and deliver some of the sessions to the children and young adults that came to the weekly sessions at various different communities in Limpopo. I was able to motivate and inspire those that came to be educated, socially conscious young people, who want to make a change in their community.

During my time in Limpopo, my team and I worked on 3 main projects, the last of which was a ‘Christmas Leaders’ Recognition Event.’ We had a memorable time and it was a pleasure to wrap up gifts for the children such as pens, exercise books and toiletries. The children appreciated the party that my team and I organised and were very appreciative of the gifts- as well as a surprise visit from Santa!

Five years later, I am still impacted by my experience overseas as it has opened my eyes to a world much bigger than London. I am currently training as a secondary school Maths teacher and volunteering with KTD196 as well as Tinghitsi School and Mohlaba crèche has made me more passionate about quality education. The adults, friends and children I met in South Africa valued and appreciated so much which was truly humbling to see.

Children and young adults who might be young carers for family members or suffering a loss in the family (just to name a few,) are given an hour or two a week as respite to take mind off their other commitments and just have some fun with their age mates.

When I came back home to London, I managed to raise some money to support the great work KTD196 are doing in Limpopo by setting up a JustGiving page as well as selling cupcakes and brownies after church. I am very thankful for the life changing experience I had in South Africa and it is one that I’ll never forget.

Currently, 2023 I am a maths teacher to years 8,9,10 &11, in Barking and Dagenham High School, London I am also head of year, so that means I manage 360 students that I am responsible for including a pastoral role, as well as teaching maths, discipline of those students, and finally working with the students to resolve any issues between them, other students and parents. Its a huge job but I know that my time in South Africa has massively shaped my life.

I wish KTD196 all the best as they continue to do such a hard job. Thank you for helping them make such a difference

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the KTD196 Community of Supporters! If you are new to us, please enjoy meeting Tamea one of the people this program has assisted. She has been with us through all 3 branches of our program and is eager to give back and serve others.

For those who have been with us for a while, you are awesome! Thank you for sharing this journey with us and for making such a huge difference in the children we serve.

Tamea's story is no different from many of the kids we support. Tamea is a product of KTD196 program, we are changing lives, families, and communities one child at a time. Her success academically she attributes to our program teaching her how to study, persevere, and have hope and a dream. It is so exciting to see her realize her dreams. Tamea is now in her final year and her future looks very bright, I am sure you agree. Through KTD196's support, she was able to access a bursary otherwise, she would not financially be able to study, her mother is unemployed and she does not have a father.

My name is Ntshuxeko (but my friends call me Tamea), and I am 21yrs old. I started with KTD96 in 2010 as a cub. Before I joined KTD196 I was very ignorant about life and didn’t care about most things, I didn’t care about basic issues such as water shortage, load shedding, littering, climate change, deforestation, and the impact that all has on people. I didn’t know that the provision of safe water was a human rights issue and that we need to hold duty bearers accountable to meet these basic needs.

After joining the KTD196, I became more aware, this program has opened many doors for me. Doors of knowledge such as I have learned about first aid, mapping, gardening and this has equipped me for everyday life and continues to help me. As a scout we would do a lot of activities in the program such as camping, hiking, and also strategic planning which helped me to make informed considered choices in life and to always do my best in everything I tried. Failure was seen as an opportunity to learn not a place to stay. Through the knowledge gained I can help people and teach others which, not only did it help me as an individual, it also impacted those around me positively. I met many different people which helped me with my communication skills and I have grown in confidence and competence.

I feel like back in high school and now in university, it is easy to get out of line and lose yourself but the children’s program was there to remind me to stay in place, do the right thing. We had scout laws and scout promise that we had to follow so this reminded me every day that my honour is to be trusted and my duty is to be useful and help others. This helped me to stay in line and not make unnecessary mistakes and to always stay rooted and true to myself. I try my hardest and always help others.

I am in university studying accounting science and will finish at the end of this year. I am going through a lot academically, everything is so difficult, I wake up to school work and sleep while trying to do school work at night. I never thought school could be this hard but I am pushing through, I’m busy doing my best every day and hopefully next year will be wearing a cap and gown. KTD196 has taught me to persevere under all difficulties.

Now that I'm over 18yrs I am a rover (the 3^rd program KTD196 has) and it’s just as exciting as it was when I was a scout. The difference is that now we do a lot of things by ourselves and that has taught me further responsibility and that I am capable of not just leading myself but also others.

I also am giving back to KTD196 because I am the Rover chairperson for Limpopo Province, I have the privilege of leading and guiding other young leaders to be better people. I'm doing great so thank you for providing me with people to look up to, people who inspire me to become a better human being every day... I know I would not be where I am today without your support.
