What is happening now?

Thanks to your donations, reconstruction is already underway in San Marcos following the earthquake that destroyed the pottery kilns and bread ovens of Afro-Mexican women artisans and bakers. Through this project, 28 pottery kilns and 16 bread ovens will be rebuilt using natural materials, ancestral techniques, and structural reinforcement.

This process has been made possible by the women’s own organizing and by the solidarity of our donors, whose support has helped make this rebuilding effort possible.

Cooperación Comunitaria joined this community-led process by providing technical guidance and holistic support. Together with the women potters and bakers, we carried out participatory assessments to better understand the causes of the damage and designed kilns and ovens with structural reinforcement that builds on traditional techniques while making them more resilient to future earthquakes and hurricanes.

The women potters and bakers have already received the first materials and, through practices of mutual support, are now making the adobe blocks needed for their kilns and ovens.

This will help 54 families recover their livelihoods and sustain a productive practice that is deeply rooted in the community life of San Marcos.

Your support is helping more women light their kilns and ovens again and helping these community-led processes continue to grow.

Testimonial:
«The women in this workshop come together to fire our clay pots and casserole dishes, and then each of us takes our own pieces home. We like working this way because we are united. Women support women».
