Empowering Voices

By Francisco Alcala | Executive Director

Dear Valued Donors,

As we reach another milestone in our journey with "The Neighborhood Storyteller," I am thrilled to share the incredible strides we've made, thanks to your unwavering support. This project, aimed at amplifying refugee teenage girls education, has been a beacon of hope and transformation.

Project Highlights:

  1. Film Festival Success: The film has received widespread recognition, featuring in 52 official selections across 25 countries. Its impactful storytelling has earned it numerous accolades, including the prestigious Women In Film Award at the Mountainfilm Festival.

  2. Global Outreach: Our film has reached audiences worldwide, not just in film festivals but also through educational institutions like Yale University and impactful organizations like USA-UN. We've also successfully engaged corporate sectors, as seen in our collaborations with companies like Dropbox for employee engagement.

  3. Community Impact: Central to our mission, we've conducted community screening events, including those at FiSahara Bubisher Libraries, Women for Women International, GirlForward, GirlUp, Refugee Self-Reliance Initiative and many others directly impacting thousands of lives. These events foster community bonding and awareness about the challenges faced by refugees, especially women and girls.

  4. Broadcasting Milestones: The film was broadcast on PBS Stations, PBS VOD, and PBS Educational, with an estimated reach of approximately 430,000 viewers in the U.S. alone.

  5. Training and Empowerment: Our partnership with We Love Reading has been pivotal. We Love Reading continues to successfully train numerous volunteers, empowering women and girls at the grassroots level.

  6. Upcoming Initiatives: Looking ahead, we're excited about our collaboration with NABU and WLR, aiming to make literacy available to 250,000 kids in Jordan, Uganda, and Kenya. We are currently in the pilot phase in Kenya.

  7. Education: the film is now available to Universities, Colleges, K-12, libraries, campus film festivals, museums, and continuing education through our partnership with GoodDocs.

Your Impact:

Your contributions have been instrumental in these achievements. You've helped bring Asmaa's story to the world, highlighting the importance of literacy, empowerment, and resilience. Your support has enabled us to create a platform where the voices of the marginalized are heard and celebrated.

Looking Forward:

As we continue this journey, our focus remains on expanding our reach and deepening our impact. We're exploring new partnerships and preparing for more screening events to inspire and engage more communities.

Thank You!

Your generosity and belief in our cause make all of this possible. We are committed to keeping you updated on our progress and look forward to sharing more success stories in our next report.

With heartfelt gratitude,
