Venezuela's iconic red siskins are facing the threat of extinction from illegal pet trade and habitat loss. At the Red Siskin Conservation Center in Venezuela, we rescue confiscated birds and provide them with safe care, nutrition, and veterinary support. Through our breeding program, these rescued birds help raise the next generation, giving red siskins a real chance to return to the wild and thrive. Your support helps improve aviary conditions and provide proper nutrition and veterinary care.
Our immediate challenge is to rescue birds that are surrendered or confiscated from the illegal trade. Without our rescue work, these birds could die - and without a place to send confiscated birds, authorities would not be able to enforce wildlife laws. Our long-term challenge is to reintroduce red siskins to areas they disappeared, which requires breeding more birds for release. Both efforts need resources for nutrition, veterinary care, and the upkeep of nursery and aviary facilities.
Securing funds for food, medicine, equipment, maintenance and caretakers' salaries ensures excellent well-being right now for the birds we receive, as well as long-term conservation success. By maintaining aviaries and a nursery of native and naturalized plants, we give birds an opportunity to learn how to eat wild foods and prepare for life in their future habitat.
Saving the red siskin benefits all Venezuelans, who cherish this species as a symbol of their natural heritage celebrated in art, dance, and music. This project builds a safeguard population in human care as insurance against extinction. Over 100 chicks have hatched at the RSCC, and our genetic plan ensures diversity for future resilience. In the long term, reintroducing red siskins into safe areas will secure their future as a symbol of successful conservation for all Venezuelans to enjoy.
