Martha's Journey for Food and Safety

By Kimberly Laney | Resource Development Officer

Martha arrived in Nyal just two weeks ago with her husband and five young children after fleeing conflict in Mayendit county. Mayendit is one of two counties in South Sudan where the United Nations declared a famine in February 2017. “We were terrified,” she said. “We also suffered a lot from the lack of food.”

Martha told us that they have lived off of mostly water lilies for the past year. "This is why all of the children have malnutrition," she said. "They are also suffering from diarrhea."

It took them six days to reach Nyal, a grueling journey that sent them walking through the bush, often at night. While security is better in Nyal, they are sleeping under a tree and food is still a struggle. “I want peace to come,” Martha said.

South Sudan is the first country in six years where famine has been officially declared and humanitarian assistance is critical. The Famine Early Warning Systems Network, a leading provider of information and analysis on food insecurity, has reported that the food-insecure population is expected to rise to 5.5 million people between May and June.

International Medical Corps provides primary health care as well as screening and treatment for malnutrition in two areas of Nyal, which is where we met Martha and her children. With a mobile unit, our teams will travel by canoe to reach remote communities seeking safety on the islands of Sudd, a giant swamp next to Nyal.

“We need food, shelter, mosquito nets, everything, especially for the children’s sake," Martha said, when asked about our services.

We thank the GlobalGiving community for your continued support as we provide health and nutrition services in famine-affected areas of South Sudan.
