A new centre for new opportunities

Miracle created by generous hearts

Miracle

Winter has arrived in Fushe Kosova, and the cold felt in every corner of the country. Yes, cold days are here, but the hopes in our hearts for a brighter future for people of neighborhoods 28 and 29 are warming us.

While the sun was shining on that cold day, my eyes were amazed by the bright blue of Azure. During these months, we covered the roof with tiles, and we hired a company that will take care of plastering and insulate the center. Isolation of the center will save electricity, and the space in the center will be warmer.

It was a pleasure to meet the women of Parenting Classes in Fushe Kosova, and every one of them has a story to tell. Unfortunately, these incredible women never had the chance to go to school and get an education. Thanks to the activities we carry out at our center, they had the opportunity to be part of Parenting classes to attend literacy and numeracy lessons. Now they can see that a good education is extremely essential for everyone to grow and succeed in life regardless of religion, age, ethnicity, etc.

The main aim is to make improvements in the roots of families because it is the same as building something that you have to start from the ground up to get to the roof. We need to strengthen the roots to have children who want to be educated and expand the range of their knowledge.

For the Vezire, educating children is now much easier because her children are attending The Ideas Partnership activities. So, they have more opportunities than she had when she was a kid.

Vezire continued 'I did not have the opportunity to go to school, but my children have that opportunity, and I'm happy that thanks to Parenting Classes activities, now I can help my children with homework. My dream came true the moment I sat in that chair and listened to the teacher about the importance of education. Now I am seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, and if you ask me about the new center, I will say a miracle created by generous hearts."

Is not just a center, it's our wings to fly

Progress over 4months and one week of building

It’s been 4months and one week, since our center began to be built! The outside and inside walls are finished, the stairs are complete and the roof is being put on. During this period the site has had a lot of visitors from our team of staff, kids from kindergarten, volunteers, neighbors, participants from our activities, and also the most eminent figures well-known in Kosovo. Every day we are one step closer towards our dream coming true. Yesterday I had a visit to the site where the center is taking shape and during the visit, I had the pleasure to meet the girls of The Ideas Partnership's Young Social Workers who’s been tackling early marriage in their community. I was wondering that what this center means to them.

Remzije is our role model for younger girls in Fushe Kosova and beyond. Her success has been praised internationally by theIdeal Me Enrichment Foundation. "The best gift any parent can give to their child is education. My family, my school and the activities of The Ideas Partnership helped me to go towards my dreams. This center will be a light for our community " says Remzije.

Arta continued "In our community girls often, get married at an early age, trapping themselves in a cycle that is almost impossible to escape. Therefore, The Ideas Partnership is working hard to keep girls in school, with the belief that education can be the best protection against child marriage. That's why this center is not just a center, it's our wings to fly and unlock our full potential".

“We need to teach girls that it’s OK to say no to marrying before adulthood. There's a world out there, to see and explore. Life is not just about eating, drinking and staying in the same place, it's so much more. We can offer so much more, to this world. We can help so many girls out there. This center is our hope for a better future" says Fiknete.

I was impressed with the answers of these young girls who will be the future of this community, the leaders who are trying to attract more girls around themselves, and aware them that education open the doors for a brighter future and turn the mirrors into windows.

Thank you all of you donors with your generous heart that made possible so today these girls can weave the dreams that will make a fundamental change in this community. So, this center is not just a simple center, it’s a lifetime home that will open the doors of knowledge for all the hopes of children Roma, Ashkali, and Egyptian, who want to be educated and inspired for a better future.

Building work begins on the land where beautiful new things will grow

Progress over the first 8 days of building

What an exhilarating few weeks we have had in Fushe Kosove! After an extraordinary wait of 7 months to get municipal permission to start building our new community centre, work began at the beginning of June. Bulldozers prepared the land and dug foundation trenches, a protective fence was set up, a 24-hour guard arrived, and his cabin and safe storage for building equipment brought on site, and preparation began of the metal rebars.

As well as the engineers and other workers who've been making this miracle emerge, the site has had plenty of other visitors from our team of staff and volunteers who want to see the new hub for the services we offer take shape. We have around 300 people through our current - rented - accommodation, and plenty of them have also been curious to see the fit-for-purpose, environmentally-friendly new building as it grows from the ground up!

Arlinda, a mother of 5 children and one of the graduates from our Fushe Kosove women's literacy programme, told me yesterday what this new centre means to her. 'There will be more space, and greenery around it for our children to play in. It's a huge benefit for our children and for the mothers of Fushe Kosove,' she said. 'The centre's services were the saving of us.' She knows the impact of the learning that takes place at our centre - having learned to read and write with our literacy teacher, Arlinda has now registered her own handcrafts business. She talked with pride about the status that the new building offers too - 'it shows that our rights are equal to everyone else's.'

She says she's particularly looking forward to going to the centre's garden area we're raising funds for, 'I want to plant a flower there,' she smiles.

We're so happy to have this powerful feeling of shared ownership of our new building and we thank all of you for planting so many metaphorical flowers on this piece of land!
