“No one in our family has access to quality education. All I hope is that my child can go to school properly, so they won’t have to struggle under the sun and rain like we did.”
Some dreams of parents are quiet ones. They are rarely spoken aloud or expressed in grand words, yet they remain quietly present, soft as breath, resting deep in the heart and gently shaping a child’s future in unseen ways. For a father who earns his living through manual labor, the dream is humble but deeply meaningful: that his child can go to school, learn with dignity, and one day step into a life kinder than the one he has known. And for that dream to begin, it starts with something so small yet so essential, a birth certificate.
T., born in 2013, is the only child in a small family renting a modest room in Thu uc. His parents take on unstable, low-income work, and their health is often fragile. Over the years, as the family moved from place to place in search of livelihood, important documents were lost, including the record of T.’s birth. At the time, no one could have imagined how the absence of a single piece of paper might quietly shape the course of a child’s life.
As T. grew older, that absence became harder to ignore. Without a birth certificate, access to formal education was not easy. He began school later than many other children and, in recent years, has only been able to follow a primary-level curriculum. Fortunately, he found a place in a charity school, a safe and caring environment where children facing difficult circumstances are not only taught, but also protected, nurtured, and encouraged to grow. There, T. is known as a gentle and sociable child. He learns computer skills and English, and he laughs and plays with other children, just as any child should. Yet beneath those peaceful school days remained a quiet uncertainty: without a birth certificate, he could not receive official academic records, health insurance, or a personal identification number. No matter how hard he tried, the path ahead could still remain painfully narrow.
The journey to obtain his birth certificate was long and filled with setbacks. At one point, his family returned to their hometown, hoping to recover old records, only to find that nothing remained. Each small hope that arose, only to fade again, left behind another silent disappointment. Still, step by step, support came. With the companionship of the school, the guidance of local authorities, and the support of MSD United Way Vietnam, each difficulty was patiently addressed and each procedure carefully completed. And after so much waiting and persistence, T.’s name was finally recorded on an official birth certificate, a simple document, yet one carrying profound meaning.
It is only a small piece of paper, but it opens a much wider door. T. is now officially recognized, with the right to education, healthcare, and the opportunities every child deserves. One long and uncertain journey has come quite close, making way for another to begin, one filled with hope, dignity, and the promise of a brighter future.
