A Vision of Hope: Nasreen's Journey to Sight

By Maleeha Aiman | Resource Development Manager LRBT

59-year-old Nasreen is a single parent and the sole provider for her son. Though Nasreen is not educated but she is a talented artisan, skilled in crafting beautiful handicrafts that she sells in the local market to make ends meet. Despite her financial struggles, she remains resilient and determined to provide a better life for her son.

Nasreen's world was colored with creativity and love, but a cloud of darkness began to cast its shadow over her life. She noticed her vision was gradually declining, making her handicraft work more challenging by the day. The world she saw through her eyes was becoming hazy, and even simple tasks became arduous.

Nasreen had her eyes tested in a neighborhood private clinic. There, she was diagnosed with cataracts in both of her eyes. The doctor explained that cataracts were the cause of her vision problems and that surgery was the only solution to restore her sight. Overwhelmed with worry about the cost of treatment and her inability to work during recovery, Nasreen's heart sank. Being a single parent with limited financial resources, affording cataract surgery seemed like an impossible dream. However, destiny had a different plan for Nasreen.

Noticing Nasreen struggling with her vision her landlord advised her about seeking free eye treatment at LRBT Korangi Hospital. Filled with hope, Nasreen gathered her courage and reached out to LRBT for help.

To her delight, LRBT welcomed Nasreen and assured her that she would receive the necessary cataract surgery for both eyes entirely free of cost. Nasreen was overjoyed and immensely grateful for this life-changing opportunity.

On the day of her surgery, Nasreen's heart raced with a mix of excitement and nervousness. The skilled surgeons and caring staff at LRBT comforted her, assuring her that she was in safe hands. As the surgery commenced, Nasreen closed her eyes, praying for the restoration of her vision.

A few days later, Nasreens world has been transformed. Tears of joy welled up in her eyes as she beheld the beauty around her with newfound clarity. The vibrant colors, the details of her handicrafts, and most importantly, the smiling face of her child—all were once again within her reach.

With gratitude in her heart, Nasreen has resumed her work with renewed vigor. The gift of sight has not only changed Nasreen's life but also improved the life of her child.

As Nasreen continues her journey as an artisan, she remains an advocate for LRBT's noble cause. She shares her story with others, encouraging them to seek help if they face similar eye problems. Through her inspiring tale, many others were able to find the light of hope in the darkest moments of their lives.

LRBT is happy to report that 51% of the total patients treated at LRBT are women and of the 3 million patients treated at LRBT in 2022, over 1.5 million were women. The fact that 51% of their patients are women demonstrates their dedication to addressing the specific needs and challenges faced by women in accessing healthcare. This statistic highlights the organization's efforts to ensure that women, who often face additional barriers and inequalities in healthcare, have access to essential eye treatments and services.

By prioritizing the treatment of women, LRBT recognizes the importance of empowering women through improved health and vision. Access to eye care not only enhances their overall well-being but also enables them to continue contributing actively to their families and communities.
