The purpose of this project is to support abortion access for youth, immigrants, and refugees living in Korea. SHARE supports youth, immigrants, and refugees who face intersectional and complex discrimination, inequality, and socioeconomic difficulties to terminate pregnancies, protect their health, and livelihoods safely. Your support of this project will greatly assist in the continued progress of these efforts.
While abortion is currently decriminalized in South Korea, the reality for youth, immigrants, and refugees remains extremely challenging. They often face barriers to accessing early and safe abortion services due to language barriers, residency status issues, lack of information, and financial difficulties. The limited availability of abortion services outside of Seoul often necessitates long-distance travel. In many cases, they need additional support for a safe space and financial assistance.
SHARE is the only organization in Korea that provides professional counseling and support for abortion. Through your support, we support medical costs for abortions for youth, immigrants, and refugees. If a person lacks a safe place during the abortion and recovery period or must travel long distances, we provide additional support. To enable more people to participate in these activities, SHARE conducts a training program for abortion counselors and activists, building the collective capacity.
The difficulties faced by youth, immigrants, and refugees in need of abortion vividly illustrate the discrimination, inequality, rights gaps, and barriers to accessing healthcare faced by social minorities in Korean society. However, the Korean government has shown little interest in this issue. By continuing to provide abortion support, we can identify the practical difficulties they face, transform these barriers into concrete agendas, and demand change from the government.
