Years ago, AdvocAid met Hannah*: a then 12 year old girl arrested for defending herself in a fight with a much older woman. It took the court two years before eventually sentencing Hannah to 25 years in prison. Hannah came from the provinces but, as the court decided that she was to spend her sentence in the Freetown remand home, she went years without seeing any of her family members.
Whilst in the remand home, AdvocAid worked hard to ensure Hannah could continue her education. Our social worker was able to build a strong relationship with Hannah through weekly visits and our legal team kept on pursuing her case. This finally led to one our biggest successes: in the beginning of 2020, Hannah was released after receiving a Presidential Pardon.
As part of our post-prison support, we traced Hannah’s family members to reunite them with her. After visiting and monitoring what Hannah would soon call her new home, we were beyond happy to send her off onto a new life. We will continue to walk by Hannah's side and support her dream to become a lawyer to help and empower others facing injustice.
Thank you for making paths like Hannah's possible. Thanks to recurring donations, we are able to offer legal aid and psycho-social support.
