Thank you for your interest and donation to the HIV/AIDS Human Rights Action 'AL' project. Your contribution helps empower people living with HIV to combat discrimination and supports the promotion of their human rights, providing a foundation for us to respond when discrimination occurs.
We continuously run programs to maintain communication among people living with HIV. In particular, we have started a new program in Korea, where access to information about HIV/AIDS is difficult, to help newly diagnosed individuals overcome stigma and information gaps. Below is an overview of the programs we have conducted.
1. Regular Program for People Living with HIV
The first regular program was held at ‘AL-JIB,’ the space created by 'ACTION AL.' About 13 people living with HIV participated, and for the first time since the organization was founded, we had a space of our own. From newcomers attending the ACTION AL program for the first time to those who have been with us for 12 years, everyone shared updates and greetings, enjoying a warm, friendly time. Although it felt a bit awkward at first, it was very joyful to have a place where we could talk at 'AL-JIB.' The best part was that we could celebrate and be happy about having this space together.
2. Newbie Care Program for Newly Diagnosed Individuals (NEWBIE-AL)
At 'AL-JIB,' we held a program and meeting for newly diagnosed individuals called ‘NEWBIE-AL.’ Participants introduced themselves in various languages, answered different questions, and shared empathy with each other. It was an opportunity to share emotions, from the initial shock of an HIV diagnosis to the feelings of telling a close one about the diagnosis, discovering AL, experiencing accomplishments, and other first-time experiences. They exchanged necessary information, asked questions, and resolved curiosities. As the program progressed, participants opened up to each other, even without a structured program, allowing for safe and discrimination-free communication. Here are some of the actual comments from the new participants:
"I felt relieved to learn about AL."
"It feels like I have another 'my parents' house' here."
"I hope more newly diagnosed individuals come to AL-JIB to share courage and strength."
"I came here because I'm interested in my rights and human rights."
"I've learned a lot from others and gained reflection and introspection."
