health for the elderly
By Douglas McMeekin | Executive Director
The biggest help that we can provide to the elderly in the region is our construction of an outpatient clinic and laboratory. This will be open and receiving patients in around July. We are receiving a 40 foot container of equipment and supplies for the health facility from a US based organization called Project CURE. They are donating everything in the container. So now there will be medical attention for young and old in our region. The other option is hours of travel by bus to get to a small town, or more hours to a small city or laboratory attention, all of which takes a lot of time and money. So this project will help everybody. The construction is almost finished but we still need final touches, so please consider any additional help you could provide. Thanks, and remember, I love you Douglas

Progress with the medical clinic
By Douglas McMeekin | Executive Director
We are making good progress in the construction of our medical clinic and laboratory for clinical exams as well as research into tropical diseases. We hope we will be up and running by March of this year. The medical facility will have a major impact on the lives and health of the elderly in the region. There are no other facilities in the area that will offer the same level of service as what we are building. People are living longer now but sometimes they sacrifice quality of life for quantity of life. It is our hope that this initiative will improve quality of life. One of the functions of our medical facility is to have specialist who will come to provide highly specialized checkups for different problems. We will have the equipment and facilities for these kinds of medical visits. The residents in the region can come to us much easier, and at less cost, than go to a capital city. And get better attention. Thanks for your support, and remember, I love you Douglas

Heat is affecting the elderly
By Douglas McMeekin | Executive Director, Yachana Foundation
The climate is changing throughout the world. But mostly the changes are heat. Record breaking temperatures all over the world, and in areas that one would not normally expect to find these temperatures, like the artic circle. Our work in rainforest protection is so important for young and old. Elderly people especially are being disproportionally affected by the heat. Virtually every day we have record breaking heat here. And because there is so much humidity, it feels like 40C (104F). I spend much of my time studying what is happening in the climate world. And the impacts of the climate changes are incredibly strong, and all over the world. We must learn to adapt. In many ways, we are better off out here in the jungle than many other parts of the world. But we also are being impacted by the heat. The work on our medical facility is moving along well. We will be finished in a few weeks. One of the advantages with the health program is we will be able to provide health education in schools and communities in the region. We can explain how people will have to adjust to the heat; some major changes in their lives. Thanks for your support. And remember, I love you Douglas
