In 2023, Trailblazer implemented a Bio-Sand Filter (BSF) distribution and Health and Hygiene Training Program in Kork Chin Village. The project aimed to improve access to clean drinking water and promote hygiene practices among poor rural families.
Among the beneficiaries was Ms. Mao’s family. In a short interview to learn about the impact the BSF and hygiene training had on her household, Ms. Mao reported, “Before receiving the filter we used water from the nearby pond and sometimes from the open well, or had to buy water from the market. The water was often dirty and had a bad smell, especially during the dry season. We didn’t always boil the water, and we didn’t understand proper hygiene practices. Our home environment was not very clean, and we lacked knowledge about preventing disease.
We had many health problems, especially stomachaches and diarrhea. These illnesses made us spend a lot of money on medicine and clinic visits. Sometimes we couldn’t go to work or school because someone was sick. This affected our income and daily life. We didn’t realize that the water and poor hygiene were the main causes.
After receiving the filter and training, we started drinking clean water every day. The filter is easy to use and removes dirt and germs [parasites, viruses, pathogens]. We also learned how to wash hands properly, clean the house and toilet, and store water safely. Our health improved, and we no longer spend as much money on medicine. We feel more aware and more responsible for keeping our home clean.
Now, our family is healthier, and our home is cleaner. My children go to school regularly because they are not sick as often. We save money on health care, and we feel happier and safer. The filter has made a big difference in our lives. I am very thankful for the support from the Trailblazer Foundation.”
Ms. Mao’s family has experienced significant improvements in health, hygiene and financial stability after receiving the BSF and hygiene training. Access to clean water and essential health knowledge has brought long-term positive change to their lives. This case study highlights how simple but effective interventions can greatly benefit vulnerable rural communities.
Your support can help other families like Ms. Mao's gain better health and experience a reduction in poverty. Please consider giving now to this effort. Thank you. We wish to thank those donors who have supported our cause and have made a real impact.
