Remote Learning Helps Students

By Elizabeth A Appleyard | Program Administrator

Fast track classes are continuing at some Learning Centers. The programs have been adapted where women and girls are unable to attend in person for example with the Sewing program.

Learning to sew helps women succeed in life and build a more hopeful future for themselves. A woman who has a tailoring qualification can make clothes for her family and friends and set up a home business sewing for others. The length of sewing course varies from 3 to 9 months depending on what level of tailoring is needed.

AIL has begun providing sewing machines for students to use at home if they are unable to attend a class in person. They can follow programming on TV which teaches sewing.  There are also useful videos on Youtube that help women advance their tailoring skills.

Women gain self-confidence and a belief in their own capacity to learn when they acquire a useful skill like sewing.  They also gain the respect of the family for their skill and their capacity to earn money.

Girls who are unable to continue their education at a site are able to access remote learning through Meraj Academy on Dr. Yacoobi’s TV Meraj. This provides daily, high school level classes for grades 7-12.  At the TV station, two spaces have been set up specifically for the production of literacy education programming. They also broadcast university courses virtually, such as management and leadership, journalism, psychology and computing. Education is one of the main objectives of Meraj TV and the station has produced hundreds of educational programs since its inception.  Adolescent girls are part of the target audience for the education programming on TV Meraj and Radio Meraj.
