Autumn 2018 Marked the Way Forward (2)!

By Abdul Sami Zhman | Project Leader

Final match: Malalay vs Qari Neik Mohammad
Final match: Malalay vs Qari Neik Mohammad

This report is in continuation of our previous report highlighting 2018 achievements.

As already reported, girls’ sports tournaments are gradually getting institutionalized as a sustainable process, however, insecurity and lack of financial resources are key challenges. Basketball was added to the series of competitions in spring – summer round of 2018 and fortunately, CPD was able to continue the competitions in both the fields (volleyball and basketball) in the autumn round as well. Luckily, a boys’ futsal tournament was also organized in autumn 2018 aimed at prevention of Gender Based Violence and using the hashtag #HeforShe. Inclusion of male members of communities has been proved effective in fighting street harassment and fighting to ensure the very basic right of women and girls to access public spaces, recreation, edutainment and assembly.

In our previous report, we shared information about autumn round girls' volleyball tournament. In this report, you will know about the basketball tournament organizing in autumn 2018.

Girls’ Basketball Tournament, Autumn Round, 2018:

Ten teams in total took part in basketball tournament. The tournament was organized from 28 October to 14 November, 2018 following the single knock out system with 9 matches in total. The list below shows the teams attended the competition:

  1. Qari Neik Mohammad
  2. Qala-e-Bakhtiar
  3. Ab-ul-Qasim Firdawsi
  4. Al-Fath
  5. Malalay
  6. Sardar Kabuli
  7. Ayesha-e-Durani
  8. Rabia-e-Balkhi
  9. Sooria
  10. Zarghoona

Winning teams were as follows:

  1. Malalay, the first (winner of the competition);
  2. Qari Neik Mohammad, the second;
  3. Al-Fath, the third.

Worth to mention that Ayesha-e-Durani girl high school hosted organizing both the volleyball and basketball tournaments of girls’ teams by allocating its gymnasium free of cost. As before, the tournament was organized in a professional way with opening and closing ceremonies that were attended by officials of different departments of MoE, National Olympics Committee, players, coaches, parents, teachers and students. Winners were awarded with cups, medals, gifts and appreciation letters and media coverage was provided by invited broadcast media.

Details on boys' futsal tournament of the autumn round 2018 will be shared in next reports. We have been enthusiastically looking forward to this year’s (2019) activities to get momentum to the already started initiatives. In spring 2018, sporadic sports matches were organized in numerous schools of Kabul city, but organized tournaments did not happen mainly due to security concerns.
