AIL has a full program of Mobile Literacy Classes planned for 2018. The classes are popular with students and the teachers are delighted to see the rapid progress made by their students. 2017 was a successful year with 519 women and girls attending 15 classes.246 students started the classes not knowing the alphabet and 136 could read at first grade level. By the end of the 4 month class 429 were reading at 4th grade level (82%) and 85 at 3rd grade and 5 at 2nd grade. Since AIL started this program in 2013 there have been 1,906 students and 1320 ended the class reading at 4th grade level.

We thought you would like to hear what Dr. Yacoobi has to say about the classes, “The mobile phone texting keeps students working on and renewing their reading skills which means they reinforce the learning everyday as well as learning new things each day. If it was not for the mobile phones they would stop after a while or get disheartened or bored without a classroom or teacher to prompt the. The texting enables them to be very creative learners and do different things with their phones such as learn mathematics, so business, manage money and household budgeting. Other subjects they use the phone for include planning saving and investing of money, teaching husbands and children to read and do math. The reach of the mobile literacy class goes beyond the students who attend.”

Thank you for your interest in our project.
