Mobile Literacy Class is very popular, with some Learning Centers running long waiting lists. The 2018 classes are underway with 245 females enrolled in 7 classes of 35 students each. 88 of the women do not know the alphabet, 75 can read a little and 82 can read at first grade level. The class runs from April through the end of July. The class starts with the functions of a mobile phone, letters and then basic question and answer texting with the teacher. This format encourages students to do more language practice and sustained practice outside of class time and beyond the course itself.
A teacher had this to say, “Students practice communicating with new people and make new friends in the class. We teach them life skills and health care with short talks and texting each day. Students attend class to gain the ability to read and write. Some students also want to find new friends and communicate with people because they are getting tired of being at home. Others would like to go to school after they finish this class.”
