AIL has held  9 mobile literacy classes so far this year for 271 women, with 3 classes still running. Eight of the classes were in Herat and one in Kabul province. Six classes have finished after 4 months and 5 classes have submitted their results.

The five classes had 30 students each the total being150. Remarkably 120 of these students ended the course reading at a 4th grade level (80%) and 30 at a 3rd grade level. All students started with minimal literacy skills: 66 did not know the alphabet, 56 knew letters and read a little, 28 read at first grade level. This is in keeping with what staff have found from this program it is highly effective in accelerating literacy acquisition in students.

“My name is Zarghona. I am one of Mobile Literacy class students I was interested in studying but because of some family problems I couldn’t study. I have 8 children and 16 grandchildren. When I heard about this course I never thought that they will give me admission and then I had fear in my heart that I would not be able to study. But after passing of one month I feel differently and I understand that I can study.  I want to thank AIL for making true my dreams, for creating a hope in my heart. I am learning reading and writing and also learning the usage of mobile phones”
