Project Update for December 2023

Hard working single mums
Hard working single mums

Another year of making a BIG difference.

Once again, this year members of the IGWR committee visited Nepal and we were joined by three friends on their first visit to IGWR-Nepal; and it was a delight to see their wonderful reactions as they discovered what an amazing difference we can all make to the lives of others.

These visits are valuable for all concerned, and members of the committee make them entirely at their own cost.

IGWR has no overhead expenses, your giving goes directly to our work in Nepal. IGWR is managed by volunteers and that includes underwriting all the usual overhead expenses such as computer costs, web-site maintenance and accounting services; all these expenses are supported by the volunteers and committee members that help keep the operations working.

Maureen (treasurer) and Peter H (chairperson) completed our annual audit of accounts and projects with Raja (director igwr-nepal); and again, we were impressed with the balanced books, record keeping, documentation and most of all the value for money that our donations achieve in Nepal.

We are inspired when we see how your giving changes lives.

1. We spent some wonderful times with the students, a games day on the roof of house one, a night party with open fire on the same roof, a visit to the amusement park to give the kids a day out and most of all we once again discovered that we are very much a part of a ‘Family of Families’

2. Our first-time friends did some sightseeing accompanied by some of the older students as guides.

3. Visiting some of the single mums we support and appreciating their story and the hard times they constantly battle has boosted our commitment to easing their burdens.

4. And “how could I say no”; we undertook a commitment to support Misan, who thought his name was ‘mission’ until we did some further investigations. His story we’ll tell in another post, but a delightful kid who now has a sponsor to see that he has the opportunity for schooling and realising his potential.

“The work of Igwr Nepal is truly life changing and it is making my heart grow 3 sizes bigger every day. The kids and parents and staff have become family, straightaway. And watching the sun rise over the Himalayan mountains this morning was also pretty great…”

And… there’s more…

5. We had a few meals and meetings with some of those that have previously ‘graduated’ from IGWR and that are now successfully making their way in the world.

6. We attended the Graduation ceremony for Ajesh and Shanti, both having completed their bachelor’s degree. An amazing achievement for them and testimony to the difference we can make by sharing our good fortune with others.

7. And towards the end of our visit, Lia organised for all the kids to have a day out at the amusement park, smiles all round and for these kids, one of the few treats they get in an otherwise routine life.

Looking ahead 2023-24 with IGWR

1. We are focussed on building our support for single mums, they are exploited and vulnerable, and yet they are the backbone of Nepal’s future.

My latest goal is to find 6 people to pay for 2 months of food each, to feed the single mums for a year. Clare was the first one, with the parcels that went out yesterday.” [Gemma]

2.In addition to food support and ensuring their children receive an education we’re assessing business opportunities that will enable these mums to be self sufficient and not have to take the heavy labouring jobs many of them currently do.

3. As a pilot Gemma has launched a go-fund-me project to see if she can raise enough funds to get one of the single mums a taxi, she will then be self-employed, empowered and able to support herself and her family.

4. We have found a sponsor for Misan, however we still need sponsors for some of the other kids we are supporting and would like to take two more young ones next year.

“there is more to do, the situation in Nepal is not looking any brighter; but we can and do make a real difference in the lives of a few, and they in turn will make a difference as they realise their potential”

Thank you for everything.

You not only enable our work in Nepal but being part of this ‘family of families’ inspires and encourages others. From the kids in Nepal… Thank You for everything

Financially we always manage, but…

We are on track to meet our 2022-23 budget which is around $140,000, and that is always a relief. However, if we are to do more, and if we want to really change the situations many single-mum families are in, then we will need to build our support base and attract new regular sponsors.

We encourage you to share the story of why you give, tell your friends, and maybe form a group that will regularly donate a small amount that you can pool together. Certainly, every gift makes a difference, and we just want to do more.
