When War Stole Her Classroom, She Found a New One - Introducing our Children

By KAUFUSI DANIELA | Projects Coordinator

S. is an 8-year-old girl who, until last September, had never set foot in a real classroom. Just when she was supposed to begin school in Ukraine, her world was turned upside down. Her mother, fearing for their lives in the heavily bombed region of Kherson, grabbed S. and her younger brother and fled the war.

For a whole year, S. tried to learn through a screen — without anyone by her side to guide her little hand as she struggled to write letters or numbers for the first time. It was overwhelming. She couldn’t concentrate. Nothing seemed to stick. She was trying to learn, but it felt like learning in the dark.

In September 2024, with the war still raging on, her mother enrolled her in a Romanian school. But everything was unfamiliar — a language she didn’t understand, a new alphabet, a strange place. She had no choice but to sit quietly in the last row, lost, confused, and alone. Again, learning felt impossible. Many refugee children in her situation gave up entirely.

But then S. came to our afterschool center for Ukrainian children — and everything started to change. Here, she found patient instructors who gently explained each lesson, helped her with her homework, taught her Romanian in a way she could understand, and introduced her to creative, joyful activities that made her feel like a child again.

In a world where the sound of tanks drowns out children’s laughter and where war steals their right to learn, our center is a place of light. A place where hope is rebuilt. Where dreams are rekindled. Today, S. is no longer the silent girl in the back of the classroom. She’s smiling. She’s trying. She’s dreaming — of one day becoming a doctor, an engineer, a programmer.

For her — and for so many others like her — your support is more than help. It’s a lifeline. It’s a spark of hope in a child’s heart. It truly makes all the difference.
