Baobab and Sustainable Farming Practices in Ghana

As we dialogue with farmers throughout the region, we look at some of the challenges of irrigation for small scale farms. One of these is clear cutting when many of the trees and plant species can provide important benefits to the ecosystem of the farming area. Baobab is one such tree that we are investigating further and exploring as a possible income source that has not been used to its full potential in Ghana.

The Baobab tree is an important part of life in many parts of Africa. The baobab tree is found throughout Africa and has at least 8 different species under this title. Often referred to as the "Tree of Life", baobab trees are very important to the ecosystem. They help retain soil humidity levels, recycle soil nutrients and prevent erosion. They also provide shade, food and water for birds, reptiles, insects and humans. The fruit of the baobab tree is used in various ways throughout Africa. A friend from Senegal shared with us the practice of making baobab elixir from the fruit of the tree. Ground into a fine powder, the fruit has many positive properties when consumed. The impressive health benefits include supplying important nutrients to the body, aid in weight loss, helping to balance blood sugar levels and reduce inflammation as well as improving digestive health.

As an initial investigation into the opportunities for developing baobab as part of income generation for farmers, Akuafo Go Solar has harvested and ground 45 pounds of baobab fruit powder for export to the United States. World Peaces, Akuafo Go Solar partner, is marketing the powder and testing opprtunities for market introduction.

Caring for the entire ecosystem is a very important part of this project. As we develop more outlets for baobab and other sustainable options for harvesting plants rather than clear cutting, we develop holistic and long term solutions that create prosperity for people and planet.
