The Congo has faced numerous challenges in recent years, including the COVID-19 pandemic, the crisis in Ukraine, conflict, and flooding caused by climate change. Despite these difficulties, there are still stories of hope and resilience emerging from the region.
Five years ago, we began supporting 250 former child soldiers and orphans in the South Kivu province. The support initially consisted of paying for their school fees and supplies with funds from the Glove Fund, FC members, and seasonal donations. However, we realized that providing education alone was not sustainable and began a project to train 100 families in livestock rearing. The project aimed to help vulnerable households improve their livelihoods, enabling them to pay for their children's education.
One of the beneficiaries of this project was a young girl named X, who, along with her mother, had fled to the village of Kalonge as an internally displaced person after her father was killed by rebel forces. With no land or resources, X's mother worked as a day laborer, doing other people's laundry or helping with their fields to pay for her daughter's education. X initially attended primary school with the support of us but eventually began raising goats, which she sold to pay for her school fees.
When schools closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, X sold her goats to support her family. Despite the challenges she faced, X persevered and continued to care for her animals while her mother worked as a day laborer. Today, X is 16 years old and in her second year of middle school. When interviewed a year and a half ago, she expressed her desire to become a doctor and attend a Japanese university if she could graduate from high school.
When we recently met with X, they found that she had grown tremendously. Her hair was styled fashionably, and her younger siblings were also thriving. X now dreams of becoming a doctor and attending a Japanese university. Her story is a testament to the resilience and determination of the people of the Congo.
Despite the challenges, there are many other families that are resilient and persevering in their livestock rearing and beekeeping activities. However, some beneficiaries have struggled since the crisis in Ukraine. We will continue to monitor and follow up with all beneficiaries to ensure that they receive the support they need.
X's story is a reminder that even in the face of adversity, hope and resilience can still prevail.
