May 2025 Update: From Adversity to Enterprise - Supporting Women's Livelihoods in Kananga, DRC

By Channie Cheung | Member of Advocacy Team

We are pleased to share our May 2025 report update on the incredible progress of the women in Kananga, Central Kasaï Province, Democratic Republic of Congo

Imagine losing everything – your home, your livelihood, your sense of security – due to conflict. This was the reality for 280 women in Kananga who were displaced and devastated by the 2018 conflict. Our project stepped in to offer a lifeline, providing vital self-reliance support. Among them, a group of 11 courageous women began rebuilding their lives through the primary processing of agricultural products, turning maize into a source of income and hope.

But their journey to stability was far from over. The COVID-19 pandemic brought a new wave of challenges. Lockdowns sent transportation costs soaring, and the price of maize, their primary raw material, skyrocketed. Their carefully built profit margins evaporated, and their savings quickly dwindled, making it impossible to purchase new inventory. They faced the heartbreaking prospect of their nascent businesses collapsing, threatening their families' survival once again.

Innovation in Crisis: How Your Support Transforms Lives

Faced with dire circumstances, these women displayed incredible resilience and ingenuity. They temporarily halted maize sales and purchases, pivoting instead to offering maize processing services and taking on daily wage labor to gradually accumulate funds. They didn't just survive; they strategically analyzed the market. By closely monitoring seasonal maize price fluctuations, they learned to buy their raw materials when prices were low and sell their processed goods when demand, and prices, were high. We are so proud to report that these beneficiaries are truly managing their businesses effectively and diligently, proving their capacity for sustainable success.

This proactive approach paid off. They steadily increased their savings, securing enough capital for future purchases. Today, these women are not only operating stable businesses, stocking maize, and selling strategically for higher profitability, but many are also reinvesting their hard-earned savings into other ventures like agriculture and livestock businesses, diversifying their income and securing a brighter future for their families.

This incredible progress, however, is a testament not only to their tireless efforts but also to the continued follow-up support from our organization. We provide essential assistance, particularly for the repair and maintenance of their processing equipment, ensuring their operations can continue smoothly.

Why Your Donation Matters Now: Sustaining Growth, Securing Futures

These women have journeyed from vulnerability to self-sufficiency, but their path to sustained growth is ongoing. To protect their achievements and empower them to thrive, continued support for their vital equipment and ongoing training is crucial. A broken machine can halt production, jeopardizing their income and the well-being of their families. Your immediate contribution ensures they can keep their businesses running and continue to build a stable future.

Transparency: How Your Gift Makes an Impact

Every dollar you contribute directly supports these resilient women:

  • $25 can provide essential maintenance for one woman's processing equipment, ensuring her business continues without interruption.
  • $50 can help purchase crucial spare parts for a maize mill, keeping production flowing for an entire group.
  • $100 can fund specialized training on advanced business strategies, empowering women to expand their enterprises and invest in their communities.
