Sewing a Future: From Stolen Childhoods to New Beginnings in DRC

By Channie Cheung | Member of Overseas Team

Thank you for your compassion and support. This is our new report!

Summary

In the northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), hundreds of young women are fighting a silent battle. Abducted as children by the brutal Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), they were forced into a life of violence and fear. Now, they have returned home, but their struggle is far from over. Forgotten by the world, they lack the skills and support to rebuild their lives. This project provides vocational training in tailoring, business skills, and trauma support, empowering these resilient survivors to stitch together a new future of independence and hope.

The Challenge: A Story of Survival

Imagine your childhood stolen in an instant. For countless girls in the DRC's Faradje territory, this was reality. Snatched from their homes by the LRA, they were taken deep into the forests, many as far as the Central African Republic. They endured unimaginable trauma, forced to become soldiers or wives to commanders, witnessing and experiencing acts of extreme violence.

Years later, they have found their way back home. However, the home they return to is not the one they left behind. Stigmatised by their communities and haunted by their past, they are often left with nothing. While international attention has faded, their needs have not. Without education or job skills, they face a future of extreme poverty and exclusion. They have survived a war, only to face a daily struggle for survival. For too long, their calls for help have gone unanswered.

How We Help: From Captives to Creators

This is where their new story begins. In partnership with our local partner, APRu, we have launched a vital reintegration program specifically for these forgotten survivors. The hum of sewing machines is replacing the sounds of war.

Our comprehensive support program empowers these young women to become skilled entrepreneurs:

  1. Mastering a Craft (Current Phase): We are providing intensive vocational training in tailoring. The young women you see in the photos are diligently learning to cut, stitch, and create garments. This tangible skill is the first step toward economic independence.
  2. Launching a Business (Next Phase - Starting April 2024): Upon graduation, we won't just wish them luck. We will provide each woman with a start-up kit to open her own small tailoring business. This includes a sewing machine, materials, and crucial business mentoring to ensure her venture is a success.
  3. Ongoing Support: The path to recovery is long. The DRC faces unique challenges, from security risks to economic instability. We provide continuous follow-up, counseling, and a support network to help them navigate these hurdles and build sustainable livelihoods.

Why Now? The Urgency is Real.

For years, these young women have been waiting in the shadows. We have finally been able to build the trust and infrastructure to launch this life-changing program. The first group of aspiring tailors is already hard at work, filled with determination and hope.

But this is a critical moment. Their training is underway, but without the resources to launch their businesses next year, their newfound skills could go to waste. Your support today is the bridge between their training and their future. You can ensure that their hard work pays off, transforming them from survivors into successful business owners who can support themselves and their families.

How Your Donation Will Be Used

Your gift, regardless of its size, will have a direct and lasting impact. We are committed to transparency and ensuring every dollar empowers these women.

  • $15 can provide a set of high-quality fabrics and threads for one woman's training.
  • $50 can contribute to the maintenance of a sewing machine, a vital tool for their learning and future business.
  • $120 can provide a full "Business Start-Up Kit" for a graduate, including her very own sewing machine, scissors, and initial materials to launch her dream.
  • $250 can provide one month of specialised business and life-skills coaching for a group of five women.
