The Emotional Journey of Reintegration

By Samadu Sayibu | PROGRAM OFFICER

As we reflect on the past quarter, we are pleased to share the significant progress achieved by SONGTABA and to express our sincere appreciation for your unwavering support. Your commitment to our mission has made a substantial impact, enabling us to effectively monitor the reintegration of women in our Programme. We are truly grateful for your generosity and partnership, which empower us to continue our vital work. Thank you for standing with us as we strive to create positive change in the lives of those we serve.

During this quarter, SONGTABA has been actively monitoring the reintegration of women, assessing their living conditions and overall progress since reintegration. In the Yendi municipality of the Northern Region, we visited three women, and the team is pleased to report a significant milestone achieved as Bintu shared her personal journey of reintegration with the team.

Bintu courageously shared her experience of being exiled from her community due to unfounded accusations of witchcraft. Following her grandmother's passing, she was unjustly branded a witch, which hindered her return home. The suspicions surrounding her grandmother were unfairly projected onto her, compelling her to remain in a camp until she was ultimately reintegrated into Wulensi in the Northern South District.

During my time in the camp, I encountered significant hardships, including a lack of food, water, and shelter. The emotional burden of witnessing my peers succeed while I felt stagnant weighed heavily on me. The stigma associated with my accusation made it exceedingly difficult to secure employment or support, resulting in my reliance on the goodwill of civil society organizations and fellow displaced individuals. Nevertheless, I now have access to essential resources and am actively working to rebuild my life after enduring bondage for many decades, focusing on addressing the basic necessities of life. Despite the ongoing challenges, my resilience remains evident, and I am grateful for the opportunity to start anew, supported by my family and friends, whose assistance has been vital to my healing process.

After a decade of enduring hardship and confinement, the moment of freedom felt like a dream realized. As I stepped into the sunlight for the first time, my heart raced with a mixture of joy and disbelief. The warm rays enveloped me, reminding me of the life that lay ahead a life I had thought I might never experience again.

At SONGTABA, we wish to extend our heartfelt gratitude to our committed donors for their steadfast support. Your generosity has been instrumental in our mission to monitor and uplift reintegrated women. With your contributions, we successfully assessed the living conditions of five women in the Nanumba South District of the Northern Region. Your involvement makes a significant difference in their lives, and we deeply appreciate your partnership in this important work.
