It is so rewarding when one generation of Ama Ghar children reaches down and lifts up the next generation. We had a true "pay it forward " moment when our Ama Ghar graduate, Sabita, who is now a social worker, was in the Terai, a region of southern Nepal that lies south of the outer foothills of the Himalayas. She was visiting the area with an aid group and came upon two young girls, ages 9 and 11, who had lost their parents to tuberculosis.
The older of the two girls, who name is Aariti, was very vocal and self-assured, and an avid protector of her younger sister. Sabita was touched by her strength and confidence and knew that this was a very special girl, so she dedicated herself to going through the proper channels to bring the girls home to Ama Ghar in early 2022.
Since that time, Aariti has become a leader of the Ama Ghar girls in her age group. Although she has never been to school before, she is a very quick learner who has already advanced through the early grades in just her first few months. Dancing and singing are her joy and she was a star performer at a recent school program during the holidays.
Your support through GlobalGiving makes it possible for a girl like Aariti, who could easily have been lost to a child marriage and a life of hard labor in the fields, to have an education and a bright future - and maybe some day she will be able to lift other girls out of poverty as Sabita did for her.
