Sangita Fought For Her Citizenship And Is Helping Others Do The Same

By Stacy Hersher | Communications Director

After 24 years in operation, we love getting to share Ama Ghar alumni success stories - and Sangita’s story of resilience and perseverance is one we are especially proud of!

Sangita came to Ama Ghar at the age of 5. She was a quiet, smiling, and observant young girl. Like many poor and at-risk youth in Nepal, Sangita didn’t have any proof of Nepali citizenship. This often happens when children come from remote places and they have no birth certificate or any other way to prove paternity. Without citizenship a person feels very vulnerable and has trouble envisioning a good future for themselves. For example, those without citizenship can’t get a SIM card, higher education certificates, bank accounts, drivers licenses and most professional jobs.

After leaving Ama Ghar, and with few options, Sangita worked as a hairdresser and earned very little pay. With the support of the Ama Ghar staff, Sangita tried every avenue to get citizenship, but kept coming up short. Eventually, she started working for a nonprofit in Nepal whose mission is to help people get citizenship papers. Through her job with this organization, Sangita was eventually able to get citizenship herself in 2024!

Sangita is a different person now that she has her citizenship papers. She radiates positive energy, and is about to start her Bachelors in Fine Art. No longer wary with the lack of citizenship looming over her, Sangita is confident and optimistic about her future. And she is still working for the nonprofit organization–helping people just like her!
