The Amazon Burning - Kids and Bugs to the Rescue!

Dear rainforest champions, Some great news to share with you in this report! Johana Reyes, our director of operations in Peru, recently got a Nat Geo grant for the education efforts we promote in the Peruvian Amazon. This grant, along with your continuous support for the cause, will allow us to expand the work we do with elementary school children and will also allow us to introduce a new activity with local college students. We are very excited about this new adventure and will be happy to keep you posted on the updates!

As for our research front, our Lepidoptera residents – four talented young women – are finishing their placement at our research station. It’s been 10 weeks for each of them to learn about field research with butterflies and to improve their research skills. They will return to their home regions soon and be ready for another semester in college or to graduate. We are very satisfied with how much progress they have made over these weeks and with the scientific papers they are writing in collaboration with ASA staff.

Dear rainforest champions,

Another year has started here in the Peruvian Amazon while the rainy season is in full bloom! As for updates on our project activities, our environmental education efforts for the year are in the planning stages and waiting for schools to reopen in mid-March after the school holidays end. Same as last year, we will be focusing our activities on single-teacher rural schools. We hope to continue expanding the impact of our work on previous years.

As for our research project with butterflies, we are happy to announce that four new undergraduate students have been selected for this year’s research residency program. All of them are women, three Peruvians, and one Ecuadorian. We are extremely excited about the results the residency program has had so far in developing research skills for the future generation of local scientists and can’t wait to see all the progress our residents will make this year.
