Helping us fight for St. Martin Heritage!

St. Martiners at The Old House

Dear Amuseum supporters,

Over the last six years, we have built something truly amazing together — a museum highlighting one of St. Martin’s most important heritage sites. From the beginning we have had two main goals. One was to create a free space where St. Martin kids and people of all ages can learn about their island. The second was to raise awareness of The Old House, where the Amuseum is located, a heritage site that has been under threat for the last fifty years. We have succeeded at both goals. But now, we really need your help!

Last Saturday April 20th, the island came out in support of the preservation of The Old House and the right of the St. Martin people to own their land. A march was organized by the local government, which is trying to purchase and preserve this site. Hundreds and hundreds of people converged on The Old House to show their support. It was one of the most beautiful things we have ever seen.

When we first came to The Old House, it was abandoned and half-forgotten. The entire site was ravaged by Hurricane Irma. Together, we revitalized it. It became a place where thousands of St. Martin youth learned new things about their home. A place where people from all over the world developed a deeper understanding of the island. A vibrant space for celebrating nature, heritage and culture, that people care deeply about. We did that together.

At this moment, the land where Amuseum Naturalis at The Old House is located has been scheduled for auction on May 13th. The local government is determined to purchase the land for the St. Martin people. The future is uncertain, but we are optimistic. Purchase by the local government could pave the way to the full restoration of the property and the next level of the Amuseum to serve the people of St. Martin. Even if we have to leave this heritage site, we will be able to recreate the Amuseum at a new location.

At this moment, we could really use your support. We had some unforeseen expenses preparing for the march last Saturday. We are also trying to support whatever might happen in the coming weeks. We anticipate continued activity in support of the preservation of this heritage site, our current location. We also want to be prepared if we need to put our exhibit panels, materials and heritage items safely into temporary storage or move them to a new location. We are immensely grateful for any help at this pivotal moment.

We have built something incredible together. It is something that has already made a difference in this community. It is something that we will continue together.

Thank you!

(And thanks to Agnes Etchegoyen for the photos of the event!)
