McChange is in the Air

By David Dern | Fund Development Manager

Fast food giant McDonalds USA has announced that it will soon only purchase pork from farms that don't use cruel gestation stalls. Dan Gorsky, McDonalds Senior Vice President for North America stated "there are alternatives that we think are better for the welfare of sows."

When housed in gestation stalls pigs are unable to turn around. This type of housing is already being phased out in many countries around the world, however, it is still permitted in Canada. The CFHS is working to address gestation stalls by negotiating more animal welfare friendly practices in the new Canadian Codes of Practice for pigs.
