Hello,
Thank you for your continued support of our Animal Cruelty Legislation project. We are pleased to share the latest news with you since our last update.
With wildfires worsening across Canada, families with pets are being left behind, and it’s costing lives. Humane Canada is calling on the federal government to formally include animal response in emergency planning and response efforts nationwide.
More than 60% of Canadian households have pets. But right now, there is no national plan to support them when disaster strikes. Lack of pet-inclusive shelter, supplies, and veterinary care puts both animals and people at risk. It also places additional pressure on first responders and rescue teams who are left to fill the gaps.
Humane Canada is working to change this, but we need your voice. Visit the links included to:

In other news, on June 5th, the Ontario Legislature voted on unanimous consent to authorize the Standing Committee on Justice Policy to continue its study on intimate partner violence, reinstated at the same stage of progress. The subcommittee’s mandate formally concluded with the dissolution of the Legislature earlier this year, however again under the leadership of MPP Jess Dixon, it will reconvene over the Legislative recess.
In July last year, members of the CVLC Dr. Amy Fitzgerald, criminology professor from University of Windsor, and Humane Canada’s Manager of Justice and Legislative Affairs, Kerri Thomson, appeared before the Committee to highlight the need for law enforcement training and risk assessment tools that recognize the link between animal abuse and intimate partner and family violence.
We are so grateful for all your advocacy and support as we work to have animals better protected in Canada.
