We continue to gain expertise with the two main components of Aquaponics, fish farming and vegetable growing. Both of these enterprises have been highly successful, in spite of the drought early on in the year which was then followed by excessive rainfall.
Funding received to date has not permitted the actual building of the Aquaponic greenhouse, but we do continue to hone and improve our project management, planting and fertilizing techniques, along with adjusting the feeding schedule for Tilapia fish at our altitude of 1,200 meters above sea level.
Students at the Center for Integrated Development, Amún Shéa, use these food production activities as real-world application of Science and Mathematics. It also forms part of our nutrition program, which combined food production and preparation with nutritious meals. This experience goes a long way towards preparing our students for continued changes in climate cycles, weather patterns and growing seasons.
