"Gardening our orchard": an entertaining activity to learn and eat well since childhood

By Luciana Palacio | Project Leader

At Cristo Obrero School in Santa Fe, by ACDI’s support, students cultivate their bond with nature.

Having fun and strengthening the connection with the earth is a task that the Cristo Obrero school encourages from an early age. By gardening the orchard school members produce their own food by learning and working all together.

Teachers, according to each educational stage, teach how to make seedling trays and then to transplant them to the ground. Pupil also learn how the structure of a garden is formed and how to take good care of crops, among other topics.

Likewise, they are taught about sustainable and healthy food system, socio-environmental impact and how to reduce it. The fundamental premise is that they can become promoters in their homes and communities. With the skills and knowledge acquired, they can ecoradge the implementation of these good habits and practices, taking care of the environment and using the best ways of land working,  multiplying the impact.

Equipped with shovels, buckets and watering cans, students from first to seventh grade are in charge of cultivating the land, learning the entire process: since the seed is sown until the plant grows and can be harvested to serve on the table.

This project also allows children to have a day to day contact with nature, since the neighbourhood does not have other green environments where to share this type of activities. Finally, it’s impressive how  they even learn to recycle by reusing materials such as wheel rims and bottles that neighbors donate to the School.

We are looking forward to keep working with Cristo Obrero School in empowering their community towards a conscious way of living regarding nutrition and nature care. ¡Hope you join us too!
